Walrond House Colour: Red   This year 1972 – 73 has been a great disappointment for Scrimgeour House.  Despite the brillant work done by Mr. Sheogobind yet we broke our record and placed 4th in the Atheltic Sports.  Contributing to this strange performance was our lack of Athletes, for besides people like R. Walrond, D. Walrond and Ameerally, we lost all the others over the past couple years.  In the Inter-House games competition we experienced a stroke of good luck, for our boys walked triumphantly off the football court after defeating Bebarry. However. this luck did not last long, for despite the fact that the members displayed excellent co-operation yet we were defeated in Football, Volleyball and Netball.  Now, this does not mean that Scrimgeour has lost its appetite for victories, we are in the process of re-building our game for victories and more victories. So opponents – watch out!  Red means danger.   In the Mashramani celebrations we had a joint party with the other houses except Mackay and although it was a “bang-on” party, yet the kids could say that they had a marvellous time playing the games planned by Mr. Sleeper.  The main attraction was Fr. Britto displaying his legs in the “sexiest male” competition, which he won.   It's indeed pleasant to say that our late comers have partly recovered from their “late fever.”  We hope that in due course, they will recover fully and cease throwing away valuable House points.   I must say that being House Captain has enabled me to know the members better and to realize that they do have latent talent.  I hope that our performance this year will stimulate them to practice more and win more.   On behalf of those who will be leaving at the end of this school year, I like to wish Scrimgeour “bon-chance.”   R. Benjamin House Colour: Blue Once more it is time to take stock of the House's performance during the last school near. I am especially happy to be the one to write this report, as Pugsley has had a very good year.   Under the inspiring leadership of our House Master, Mr. Naipaul and with the co-operation and keen interest of both House Masters and students, Pugsley emerged Champion House during the I 971 – 72 academic year.   The new year dawned with Mr. T. Ferguson taking over as House Master and I can only wish that he will get every bit of co-opcration during his term so as to keep the House's flag flying high.   We are sad to bid good-bye to two of our House Assistants, Mr. A. Rambali who has left for Canada to pursue higher studies and Mr. C. I. Seepersaud who is doing the same at the University of Guyana.  At the same time we bid welcome to an old face in the person of Mr. A. Persaud who has joined our ranks, and to the newcomers Mr. K. Seecharran and Mr. C. Harripersaud.   Pugsley started off the year in fine style by repeating last year's result as Champion House in Athletics.  Here I must pay tribute to all our athletes but moreso to Janice Richmond, Richard Mortals, Samuel Johnson and Lynne O'Dowd.   In the Debating Competition, Pugsley carried everything before it to emerge convincing winners. Congratulations to all members of the team!   In football, we emerged second though we did not do quite as well in volleyball and netball.  However, the great Montaigue once said “There are some defeats more triumphant than victories.”   For Mashramani, Pugsley merged with Scrimgeour, Cooper and Beharry and the party which was the aim was a huge success – every one had a grand time.  Here. Alphonso   The wheel of fortune spins and as it turns it brings us joy followed by sorrow, success followed by failure.  We started that near on a sad note for we lost our House Master, Mr. D. V. Barran.  Special tribute must be paid to this stalwart for the way in which he inspired all members to do their best.  However, he was replaced by Mr. E. Rambarran – a man with as much zeal, enthusiasm and ability.  During the Easter Term, we also welcomed a new master to the house, Mr. R. Best, who pledged his support in every field of endeavour.   All in all, this was indeed a good year for Mackay House, although we had our ups and downs.  We began by placing second in the Annual Inter-House Athletic Sports and we followed this spate of success by placing first in both the football and volleyball competitions.  Special praise must go to all of our team and athletes, especially G. Dhanness, M. Sukhraj, C. Darnley, R. Alphonse, M. Alphonso and D. Houston, who were instrumental in our success.  In the debating and netball competitions we were not successful, but our teams must be commended for the great amount of team spirit and well-mannered behavior displayed even when they were faced with defeat.  As our Debating team rightly proposed and enacted in their debate, “It is more important to be well-mannered than to be champion of the world.”   Our House party was held in February and as usual, it was a success.  Although all Mackaians did not fufill their duty to tbe House in its organization, the co-operation and house spirit shown by others far outweighed their failings.   There are some of us who might not have excelled in the various competitions, but their ready participation in these ventures, their regular and punctual attendance at school and their sweet and affable nature have not...

Smith   C. Menezes Colour: Pink   With the relevant and highly respected motto “we do our best” Cooper House had had a fairly successful year in all the school's events under able and inspiring leaders.   The points which the house has obtained will not reveal the spirit of Cooperites. We finished third with 147 points, but just 8 points away from the winner in athletics.  The most outstanding athletes of the House and also of their age groups are: H. Wilson and R. Smith.   In football the House displayed such spirits and talent for the future but lost to Pugsley 0 – 2.  We lost because the star players Chee and Menezes arrived late, but the team was led into the field full of confidence. We lost but next time we will win because we will do our best which will eventually win.   In Netball the team under the captaincy of Miss V. Kendall convincingly defeated Mackay 26 – 5.  In the following match Scrimgeour won 16 – 0.  Debating has always been a popular and successful event for Cooperites after winning the team from Scrimgeour and defeated by Pugsley.  The team was M. O. Inshanally, L. Thom and R. Menezes. We did our best.   The Mashramani Party with three other Houses was 'bang on' and the participants really ‘lived it up’.  The games and the party were exciting and thrilling, and everyone took part and enjoyed themselves especially with the ‘pinata.’   Cooperites are not only involved in parties and games like football and cricket.  The captain of the house is the Head Boy and President of the Students Council, C. Menezes is the Treasurer of the Students Council, Miss J. Heyliger is the President of the Modern Languages Club, Treasurer of the Music Club and member of the Magazine, M. Assim is the President of the History Society, member of the Magazine Committee and Propaganda Manager of the Chess Club.  We also have five members in the School's Patrol. ...

Dharampaul House Captain (Boys):  Puran Singh House Captain (Girls):  Lenise Fredericks Colour:  Orange   Last year in my report I mentioned that Beharry House has the potential and that the sooner each member realises this the better it would be for the house.  This year I am happy to be back, and very proud to present this report of a new Beharry house.  I am proud to say that the members, together with the teachers, have done a great deal in the space of a few months to sort of lift the banner of Beharry house and to make it a force to be reckoned with in Bebice High School.  It is now the ''House of the Future'' in Berbice High.   At the beginning of this year we welcomed one addition from the staff in the   person of Miss Dharampaul, while we lost Mr. Newton, who returned to his native country after serving for two years at Berbice High.  We also started this year with a new house Mistress, Miss Olivia Benjamin, who most unfortunately left us at the end of the Christmas Term to take up a new appointment at another secondary school.  It was, however, Miss Benjamin who started the change in Beharry house and in her short period as Housemistress she has done a lot for the house and to her and also Miss Harris, who also left us at the end of the Christmas term, all the members of Beharry house wish you the  best in all your endeavours.   We also welcomed an addition of some thirty students to Beharry house.  Twenty six of these came from the four first forms and the other four were from the Lower VI.   With the departure of Miss Benjamin, we were fortunate to have Mr. Farley as our new House Master and here again I think Mr. Farley has succeeded in establishing rapport with the students in a very short time and no small issue of our success through the year must be attributed to him and the other members of staff, all of whom have the interest of the House at heart.   In...

  Student: Sir, how you do feel after being Headmaster for one year? Headmaster: I have a feeling of some satisfaction, since I have the full backing of the staff, the co-operation of the student body, parents and old students.  Had I the full compliment of the staff, I would have been happier, but despite the stay shortage, the year has been fairly good.  I was able to carry out a programme of extra-mural activities which can be seen in the successful trip by students to Surinam, and the Interior visit by Sixth Form Biology and Geography students.   Student: Would you say that one of your personal aims was fulfilled on becoming Headmaster? Headmaster:  Certainly!  I was given a great honour by being named Headmaster of Berbice High School, and I can safely say my ambition was achieved.  It started when I as Junior Teacher with London Matriculation, I joined the staff on (28th April, 1951).  This experience as a teacher has helped me a great deal, and I derived a great deal of satisfaction from tbe Deputyship under Mr. Beharry and Mr. Armstrong respectively for approximately eight years.   Student: Do you feel that B. H. S students live up to your expectations? Headmaster:  Most do, but some could do more. Some students allow themselves to be satisfied with just mediocre standards. They should strive to do their utmost: They need to cultivate a more competitive spirit.   Student: Has your plan for the year been fulfilled? Headmaster:  It has been fulfilled for more than 70%.  As we still have one more month before the term closes, more can be done, and I can safely foresee at least 90% with the new implementation of a Guidance and Counselling Team.   Student: Is the staff with you in all your plans? Headmaster:  I have the full backing of the staff.,without which things would not have been to my satisfaction.   Student: Do you think that B. H. S. could eventually become the No.1 school in Guyana? Headmaster:  To become No. 1 we need more scholarship type of students.
